Franklin's Tower was first performed by the Grateful Dead in June , one of the rare Dead shows during that year. The song was played fairly regularly through to The song often occurred as part of the Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower sequence but did occur just as many times away from this sequence. -

This show is freakin awsome! Although they didn't play many shows at all in '75, this one makes up for it. One of the best shows I own. The Help on the way/Slipknot!>Franklin's tower is PERFECT. The setlist is pretty strange and quite rare for the Dead, they're playing all their new "Blues for Allah" material. -

There is a Franklin lighthouse in Maine, though I doubt this is related at all to Franklin’s tower in this song. The concept of Franklin’s tower helping one that is lost find one’s way is another lighthouse analogy, however, I think that Franklin’s tower is a symbolic, rather than an actual lighthouse. -

The Grateful Dead broke out “Franklin’s Tower” for the very first time on June 17, , at the fabled Winterland in San Francisco – and along with it, they played “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot” forming the powerhouse suite, Help> Slip> Franklin’s. -

I found this absolutely incredible write up from Robert Hunter in It is his response to someone calling Grateful dead lyrics meaningless. It is long but an incredible read! meaning is not an irreducible Ur-language. A good lyric is allusion, illusion, subterfuge and collusion. A poor lyric is information about its own paucity of resource. That doesn't mean the latter cannot be a great. -
